„Dzieciniec” is a vast Jordan garden with an intimate building of the Municipal Youth Culture Centre. The green and spacious complex was built in 1929 between Dębińska Street and the Warta River and the River Baths built on the river at the same time. In recent years, after years of degradation and oblivion, both Dzieciniec and Baths have been extensively restored in a form very similar to the original nearly a century ago.
Now it’s time to introduce contemporary and functional variety to the geometrically laid out garden space, designed with young people in mind. To create such elements that are missing in the aesthetic, but still poorly animated space. Furniture that is useful, multifunctional, easily accessible, unique with an element of fun – and at the same time respectful of the historical context, as Dzieciniec is under the tutelage of historical preservationists.
LOCATION
Furniture located under a beautiful tree near the stairs – the main entrance to the Garden and the playground. Such a location of the furniture was determined by the proximity of the main building (the need to move the easels to classes), the shadow – provided to the participants by a great ash leaf maple and a view of the historic building of Dzieciniec – which became an inspiration for young artists working in this space.
ACTIVITIES
There are 6 artistic clubs operating in the Youth Cultural Centre No. 1, which differ not only in term of the age of their students, but also in the emphasis on developing certain artistic techniques or a specific subject of classes.
NEEDS
The proposed furniture intends to allow implementing art classes (creating using various techniques for groups of up to 12 people) during the warmer months, as well as to give the opportunity to implement small exhibition activities – to go beyond the walls of the building with the activities of MDK 1.
Ultimately, this area could also function as a place integrating the students of the MDC 1 with the housing estate’s residents, constituting a place for presenting the achievements of children and young people as well as the activities of the Youth Cultural Centre. The place is supposed to respond to the needs of intimacy, proximity, leisure, relaxation, creativity, learning of students, and attract the attention, encouraging others to integrate.
This location make it possible to create a gallery, a kind of wall of creativity allowing to present artistic works of the pupils, but also encouraging creative actions by children and young people living in the vicinity.
FINAL RESULTS
Our aim was to create a multifunctional outside space for kids of the art and craft club. We introduced three main elements: The circle, the long table, and the staircase.
The circular bench gives not only identity to the structure but also allows to gather and focus as a group on one point. This creates an intimate space and helps concentrating. The second element, the long table gives kids the opportunity to sit next to each other and have a more traditional experience of art classes. It is directed to the trunk of a tree, under which shadow the whole construction is hidden. The third element are the stairs. While climbing them, the viewpoint, as the perspective changes. This gives a chance to perceive the tree and the surrounding from different hights and levels. At the same time our construction plays with the overlapping of the two primary shapes, the rectangular frames, and the circle.
Overall, our design aims to bring people together independently from their size and age. Our aspiration was to create a place that is not only specific to art classes but can be used beyond that.
Tutor: Martial Marquet
Architect from France
Founded in 2014, Martial Marquet Studio combines architecture, scenography and design. A trans-disciplinary approach that pays the same attention to the project’s conception as to the final result, where an apparent formal and technical simplicity prevails. For several years now, many of the studio’s projects have been oriented towards the design of convivial and welcoming spaces, both in public spaces and in the landscape. The purity of forms reveals the play of construction and assembly, giving its constructions a minimalistic and sculptural dimension. Perennial or ephemeral, hybrid and evolutionary, his creations advocate an efficiency of form and use, making the user’s experience at the project’s core. His creations also have a formal and symbolic existence of their own, which the architect describes as „signal objects”. Often carried out collectively, Martial Marquet sees his projects as new tools for various experimental and interactive alternatives. Architectures, furniture, installations and objects are conceptually and structurally envisaged as vectors of narratives that reinvent social space.
Martial Marquet is an architect (DESA HMONP) and designer (trained at the ENSCI les ateliers), he is based in Paris area, he works in France and abroad (Hungary, Portugal, Cuba…). Aside of the studio Martial is teacher and PHD candidate, he is associate lecturer at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles and professor at Social Design master program at Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Valenciennes.
